Vitamin A status of ewes and lambs grazing nitrogen fertilized orchardgrass pastures.

چکیده
Experiments described were conducted to define the vitamin A status of ewes and lambs grazing orchardgrass fertilized at various levels of N or N plus micro-elements. Four fertilizer treatments (56 kg N/ha; 168 kg N/ha; 504 kg N/ha; 504 kg N/ha + Co, Cu, Mo, Zn and S) were applied to replicated hay and pasture plots of Potomac orchardgrass on a Gilpin silt loam soil. Ewe lambs were allocated randomly to fertilizer t reatment groups and maintained on pasture and hay from 1967 to 1971. Forage nitrate and carotene levels increased with increasing levels of N fertilizer, but fertilizer level did not affect ewe blood carotene, blood vitamin A or liver vitamin A levels. Overall average values were .06% NO3-N and 127 mg carotene per kilogram of forage DM, 12.3 meg carotene and 26.7 meg vitamin A per 100 ml of blood, and 92.5 meg vitamin A per gram of fresh liver. Correlation analysis of animal data (blood carotene, blood vitamin A, and liver vitamin A) with forage components (nitrate and carotene) indicated that while some co-efficients were significant (P<.05), there was little association of animal and plant factors. Blood and liver vitamin A tended to be higher in animals grazing pastures treated with high levels of N. No measurable vitamin A was present in livers of newborn lambs, but large liver concen-

M I N E R a L Status of Beef Cows a N D Sheep on Spring Pasture
The uti l ization of minerals in orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) fertilized with kieserite (2,240 kg/ha) was examined in spring with lactating beef cows and wether lambs. Kieserite increased the concentration of Mg in vegetative herbage from .22 to .29% (P<.01) and of S from .20 to .29% (P<.01), with little effect on other minerals. Fert i l ization also increased (P<.01) apparent absorpti...

Four years of grazing trials were conducted with Brassica forages to evaluate their chemical composition and effect on ADG of fattening lambs and breeding ewes in late fall. Brassicas tested included kales (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC), turnips (B. rapa L.), and a chinese cabbage hybrid (B. rapa L. x B. pekinensis [Lour.] Rupr.). Daily gains of lambs varied widely among years (19 to 3...
متن کاملAlkyl Phenols and Diethylhexyl Phthalate in Tissues of Sheep Grazing Pastures Fertilized with Sewage Sludge or Inorganic Fertilizer
We studied selected tissues from ewes and their lambs that were grazing pastures fertilized with either sewage sludge (treated) or inorganic fertilizer (control) and determined concentrations of alkylphenols and phthalates in these tissues. Mean tissue concentrations of alkylphenols were relatively low (< 10-400 microg/kg) in all animals and tissues. Phthalates were detected in tissues of both ...
متن کاملInfluence of grazing cattle and sheep together and separately on animal performance and forage quality.
Cattle and sheep grazed together and separately from April to October during 3 yr. Initial forage composition was 29% Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), 11% white clover (Trifolium repens L.), and 60% weeds. There were six Angus cow-calf pairs or six ewes (1/2 Dorset x 1/4 Finn x 1/4 Rambouillet) with 11 lambs per each of three pasture replications for single animal species. Six cow-calf pa...
متن کاملThe use of chicory for parasite control in organic ewes and their lambs.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential benefits of grazing lactating ewes and their lambs on chicory (Cichorium intybus). Fifty-six certified organic twin-rearing ewes were either drenched with an anthelmintic or not, within 2 days after parturition and were grazed upon either grass/clover or chicory pastures. Around 12 weeks after parturition a subset of 12 lambs per tre...
